Collective Unconscious

2020

A scene that blurs the line between dream and reality, illustrated in Procreate.

This piece explores my connection to the water crises experienced by both Africans and African Americans. In Michigan, the largely African American city of Flint has relied on water bottles due to contaminated water. Similarly, nearly 40% of people in Uganda need to travel more than thirty minutes to access safe drinking water.

While I am unaffected, there is still a sense of attachment to the issue that may come from the collective unconscious: the part of the unconscious mind derived from ancestral memory and experience and common to all humankind.

To depict my unconscious connection to these problems, I created a dream-like scene in which geographical distance is ignored and I share the experience of both Africans and African Americans by traveling between a room in Flint, Michigan and a lake in Uganda.

I made use of line, scale, and movement to make a semi-realistic scene. I experimented with cool colors in this piece and with sequential art by having the piece follow one character through different points in time. The hurried brushstrokes and composition also help to create a sort of a semi realistic landscape similar to what someone may experience while dreaming.
